ChatGPT Ads in Austria: costs, process and requirements

Since the end of August 2026, ChatGPT Ads have also been directly available to businesses in Austria. This creates a new channel alongside Google Ads and social media advertising: ads appear exactly when people in ChatGPT are comparing options, looking for solutions or preparing a purchase decision.

This guide explains in plain terms how advertising in ChatGPT works, what costs are realistic, what requirements businesses should meet and when a first campaign is worthwhile. Information as of 4 September 2026.

In short: Since the end of August 2026, ChatGPT Ads can be booked via self-service in Austria. Billing is per click (CPC) or per 1,000 impressions (CPM). For a first test by a small business, a media budget of around €500 to €1,500 per month is a realistic starting point. A suitable landing page and clean conversion tracking are prerequisites. The channel makes sense as a complement to Google Ads, not as a replacement.

What are ChatGPT Ads?

ChatGPT Ads are paid ads that are displayed below a ChatGPT answer. They are clearly labelled as sponsored and visually separated from the actual answer. The advertising does not change or influence ChatGPT's answer.

An ad can include the advertiser's name, a logo or favicon, a headline, a description, an image and a link to the landing page. With one click, interested users go straight to the company's offer.

The key difference from classic search engine advertising lies in the context. Users often don't just type in a short search term, but describe in more detail what they need, what problem they want to solve and which criteria matter to them. This allows an ad to appear at a specific stage of the decision-making process.

Since when has it been possible to advertise in ChatGPT in Austria?

OpenAI initially built up its advertising offering gradually in 2026. At the end of August 2026, self-service access via the Ads Manager was extended to Europe. This means that businesses from Austria can now also create their own campaigns, set budgets and analyse their ads.

The channel is still at an early stage of development. Features, available audiences, ad formats and policies can therefore change relatively quickly. Businesses should first test campaigns in a controlled way and not be too quick to compare the results with long-established platforms.

How are ads selected in ChatGPT?

ChatGPT Ads do not work exclusively with classic, exactly booked keywords. Among other things, OpenAI takes into account the content and intent of the current conversation, the landing page, ad texts, images and the advertiser's so-called context hints.

These context hints describe topics, situations or terms for which an offer could be relevant. They help the system with matching, but do not guarantee that an ad will appear in a particular conversation.

For businesses, this means that a clear description of the offer and a landing page that matches the topic are particularly important. Generic advertising phrases are not enough. Ad, landing page and the actual service should clearly match in content.

Who sees ads in ChatGPT?

According to OpenAI's current information, ads are not shown to Plus, Pro or Business users. Accounts associated with people under 18 do not receive ads either.

Advertisers do not get access to private chat histories. The Ads Manager provides aggregated performance data such as impressions, clicks, spend, click-through rate and conversions. The specific conversation of an individual user is not disclosed to the advertising company.

What do ChatGPT Ads cost?

ChatGPT Ads can currently be bought on the basis of impressions or clicks:

  • CPM: billing per 1,000 impressions, mainly for reach objectives.
  • CPC: billing per valid click, mainly for website visits and enquiries.

Advertisers set a maximum bid at ad group level. For CPC campaigns, OpenAI currently recommends a maximum starting bid of around US$3 to US$5 per click. The price actually paid is determined by a relevance-weighted second-price auction and can vary depending on competition, audience and quality.

A very small budget often delivers too few clicks for a meaningful assessment. For an initial test by Austrian SMEs, a media budget of roughly 500 to 1,500 euros per month can be a realistic starting point. That is no guarantee of success: what matters are your margin, deal value, conversion rate and the demand for the specific offer.

What additional costs are there?

On top of the ad budget, there may be costs for strategy, account setup, tracking, ad copy, images, the landing page and ongoing optimisation. The ad budget should be paid directly by the company to OpenAI. That way, costs and account access stay transparent.

With professional management, it should be clearly defined in advance which services are included: number of campaigns and ads, optimisation frequency, reporting, new ad creatives and the setup of conversion tracking.

Which businesses can benefit from ChatGPT Ads?

A test is particularly worthwhile if several of the following points apply:

  • The offer solves a clearly describable problem.
  • Customers research and compare before buying.
  • A new customer has a sufficiently high economic value.
  • The website can reliably capture enquiries or sales.
  • There is a clear landing page for the advertised offer.
  • The business can collect data for at least a few weeks.

Examples include local service providers, specialised B2B suppliers, online shops, travel and leisure offers, and digital products or educational offerings. The channel is less suitable for businesses that expect large volumes of cheap clicks straight away or whose website does not yet offer a clear path to an enquiry.

Which industries and content are restricted?

In the early phase, OpenAI is focusing mainly on consumer goods, local services, travel and experiences, and digital products and education. Sensitive or regulated areas are reviewed more strictly or are currently partly excluded.

These include in particular political content, gambling, weapons, tobacco, alcohol, certain health offerings, financial products and other regulated services. Misleading promises, unverifiable results and ads that look like an official part of ChatGPT are also not permitted.

The review covers more than just the ad. The linked landing page and the business itself must also comply with the policies. Before every campaign, you should therefore check whether the industry, the advertising claim and the landing page are currently approved.

What does a successful campaign need?

1. A specific campaign goal

Before launch, it must be clear whether you want to achieve awareness, website visits, enquiries, appointments or sales. Without a measurable goal, a campaign can hardly be optimised in any meaningful way.

2. A suitable landing page

The landing page should pick up the ad’s promise directly, load quickly and work well on mobile devices. A visible next step – such as an enquiry, appointment or purchase – prevents unnecessary bounces.

3. Compelling ad creatives

The headline, description and image must quickly make clear who the offer is for and what benefit it provides. Exaggerated promises are neither convincing nor compatible with the advertising policies.

4. Clean performance tracking

At the very least, enquiries, bookings or purchases should be tracked as conversions. UTM parameters can also help to clearly attribute visits from ChatGPT in your existing analytics tools.

5. Enough testing time

Individual days say little. Images, copy and context hints should be tested in a controlled way. Only after a sufficient number of impressions and clicks can you judge which combination actually works.

How do you set up a ChatGPT Ads campaign?

  1. Define your goal and offer: Which service or product is being advertised, and what action should follow?
  2. Set up the ad account: Company details, billing and the necessary access rights are added.
  3. Plan the campaign structure: Goals, regions, languages, context hints and budgets are defined.
  4. Create the ads: Copy, images and landing page are aligned with each other.
  5. Test the tracking: Clicks and key conversions are checked before launch.
  6. Launch and optimise: Bids, ad creatives and targeting are refined based on real data.

Which metrics really matter?

A high share of clicks is positive, but it is not the actual business goal. What matters is what happens after the click. The most important metrics include:

  • Impressions and reach
  • Click-through rate and average cost per click
  • Number and cost of conversions
  • Quality of incoming enquiries
  • Revenue or economic value per customer won

Especially at the beginning, your assessment should remain sober. A new advertising channel can offer opportunities, but it does not yet have the same data history and routine as Google or Meta.

ChatGPT Ads or Google Ads?

The two channels can complement each other. Google Ads reach people based on a search query or other signals within the Google ecosystem. ChatGPT Ads focus more on the context of a detailed conversation and the intent that can be recognised in it.

For most businesses, it therefore makes little sense to replace existing, profitable campaigns right away. ChatGPT advertising should first be tested as an additional channel. After that, the actual quality and cost-effectiveness of the results decide whether to expand it.

Frequently asked questions about ChatGPT Ads

Does an ad influence ChatGPT’s answer?

No. OpenAI keeps ads separate from answers. Advertising is labelled and appears in its own section.

Can a business book specific conversations or search terms?

Context hints help with topical matching, but they do not work like guaranteed exact-match keywords. A specific impression cannot be promised.

Do advertisers get access to chat histories?

No. Businesses receive performance metrics, but no private conversations of individual users.

How high should the first ad budget be?

That depends on the offer and the goal. For many smaller businesses, a controlled test with a monthly media budget of around 500 to 1,500 euros makes more sense than a big immediate launch. With high click prices or complex services, a larger budget may be needed.

Can every industry use ChatGPT Ads?

No. Certain sensitive and regulated areas are restricted or excluded. You should check OpenAI’s current policies before creating a campaign.

Conclusion: test early, but assess the results realistically

ChatGPT Ads give businesses in Austria a new way to reach people who are already dealing with a problem, a choice or a purchase decision. That makes the channel interesting – but it does not replace a convincing landing page, clean tracking or an economically viable offer.

A structured test with clear goals, a limited budget and ongoing evaluation makes more sense than big promises. Only the actual cost per enquiry or sale shows whether ChatGPT advertising works for a business in the long term.
